RTVS MaBAL and PoCUS Education Paused for Summer

Weekly sessions designed to facilitate remote learning and communities of practice using Real-Time Virtual Support (RTVS) have been paused for the summer.

Midwives on the Maternity and Babies Advice Line (MaBAL) RTVS team have been providing coaching sessions for nurses. The coaching sessions, which took place on Thursdays at noon were geared towards nurses supporting maternity care in rural sites, wrapped up in June and will be relaunched in September.

The popular sessions started in January 2022 and covered a range of topics through interactive case discussions. Topics covered included First Trimester Bleeding, Imminent Delivery, Infant Nutrition and Breastfeeding, Cord Prolapse, Discharge Education in Early Labour, Perinatal Loss, and NRP, among other great topics. The final session before the summer break took place on June 23

The plan is to carry out some development work to reinvigorate the sessions and relaunch version 2.0 in the fall. Anyone with any feedback about the previous sessions is encouraged to fill out an evaluation form (if you have not already done so) so that we can continue to improve the sessions. Please continue to send through future case / topic ideas through this form.

RTVS is also used to help physicians and other providers train in Point of Care Ultrasound (PoCUS). Practice opportunities ran every Wednesday at noon from November 2021 to May 2022. The popular sessions led by Dr. Virginia Robinson are now being paused for the summer. The goal was to provide an opportunity for rural physicians, midwives, nurse practitioners, physician residents, students and other health care providers who have access to ultrasound to call in and get help with their ultrasound skills, usually around a specific exam. Read more about the PoCUS Practice Sessions here.

PoCUS Practice will return in October. If there are any particular exams you would like to see covered in the fall please let Dr. Robinson know at vrobinson@rtvs-bc.ca.
