UBC Rural Continuing Professional Development (RCPD) is proud to announce that its Hands-On Ultrasound Education (HOUSE) Program is the recipient of the 2017 College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Program Award.
The HOUSE Program, a hands-on point-of-care ultrasound course, was created in 2015 by UBC RCPD with funding and coordinating support from the Joint Standing Committee on Rural Issues (JSC) and the Rural Coordination Centre of BC (RCCbc). HOUSE offers customizable course content based on particular disease presentations such as shock, trauma, dyspnea, abdominal pain, allowing participants to customize their medical education to their local needs and skills. The course travels to BC’s rural communities, bringing faculty and equipment to rural and remote providers to facilitate the hands-on learning that requires in person support.
HOUSE has delivered education to many communities and conferences since its creation. Program Lead, Dr. Tandi Wilkinson, notes that the program was designed to meet the unique needs of BC rural physicians and includes some innovative educational aspects. “The challenge of learning point-of-care ultrasound in a rural setting is in acquiring hands-on skills. For that reason, the HOUSE Program brings one instructor for every two learners, ensuring that participants get much more probe time than in other ultrasound courses. Our spectacular faculty includes rural physicians, who are particularly helpful in teaching how and when to incorporate the learning into bedside care of the patient. We’ve been there. We also see this course as a rare opportunity for participants to keep up to date with what is new in the ultrasound world – the course is constantly evolving and adapting.”
The 2017 CFPC Continuing Professional Development Award will be formally presented to UBC RCPD at the CFPC’s 25th National CPD Accreditation Conference being held in Ottawa on Sept 25 and 26.
